Mid-Continent is holding a creative writing competition

Mid-Continent University is pleased to present the 2012-2013 Creative Writing Competition open to all MCU students.  Cash prizes will be awarded for first place, second place, third place and honorable mention.  Completed entries must be received by Monday, February 25, 2013 to be eligible.  See below for more info:


  • 1st Place - $200
  • 2nd Place- $150
  • 3rd Place- $100
  • Honorable Mention- $50

Rules of Competition

  • Each student may submit up to, but no more than, three entries (only one entry per category allowed).
  • Each entry must be original, unpublished, and unproduced.
  • Each entry must be typed--double spaced--on 8 1⁄2” X 11” white paper (do not use staples; use paper clips only). If selected for publication, student will be asked to submit an electronic copy of the entry.
  • Submissions will not be returned to the student. All works remain the property of the student, but MCU retains rights to a one-time publication.
  • The student’s name, and any other identifying information, should appear only on the entry form. The submitted work(s) should not include any information about the author.
  • All submissions must be received by Monday, February 25, 2013. 


  • Inspirational Nonfiction (up to 2,500 words)
  • Fiction (up to 2,500 words)
  • Poetry (up to 32 lines)
  • Children’s Fiction (up to 2,500 words) 

Judging Criteria for Inspirational Nonfiction, Fiction, and Children’s Fiction

Format; appropriate writing conventions; spelling, grammar, and mechanics; correct category* and appropriate length; suitability; plot and structure, strength of opening and closing; transitions; impact; clarity; use of figures of speech

Judging Criteria for Children’s Fiction

Age appropriate; meets above criteria

Judging Criteria for Poetry

Fresh; use of poetical devices; rhythm *Judges reserve the right to re-categorize entries.
